FAQs

Website & e-Commerce

Why should I hire a professional web designer? Can’t I just do it myself?

You can! Certainly, there is a time and a place for quick, self-made websites. However, if you have big dreams for your business it is often faster and more cost-effective in the long run to hire a professional. My two cents? Hiring the right web designer allows you to focus on your core business operations which is where you’ll make the biggest impact. A website by a professional is not only beautiful, it will be user-friendly, responsive, and optimized for search engines. Take building a website off your plate and let me do the heavy lifting.

What is the difference between a website and an e-commerce site?

A website typically serves as an online presence for a business, providing information about products, services, and contact details but with no ability to buy/checkout etc. An e-commerce site, on the other hand, allows businesses to sell products or services online, including features like shopping carts, payment gateways, and product listings.

What is the average timeline and cost for designing and launching a website or e-commerce site?

Timelines and costs vary based on complexity, features, and customization. Typically, a basic website can take a few weeks to a few months, while an e-commerce site may take longer due to product listings and transaction functionalities.

How often should I update my website or e-commerce site?

The bones of your website should get a full update every 2-3 years or when there are significant changes in your industry or technology to keep it fresh and competitive. However, both websites and e-commerce sites should be updated regularly to keep up with industry trends, improve functionality, add new products, and ensure security, which helps maintain customer interest and trust.

What is SEO?

SEO is short for Search Engine Optimization. It is the process of improving your website to increase its visibility on search engines like Google. For example, using relevant keywords in your website to help search engines understand what your site is about, creating high-quality content to attract more visitors and backlinks, and ensuring your site loads quickly.

SEO is not a one-time process, but by focusing on SEO as part of your ongoing website maintenance, your small business can attract more organic traffic leading to more customers and sales.

Why is responsive design important for my website or e-commerce site?

Responsive design ensures your site adapts and functions well on various devices (desktops, tablets, smartphones), improving user experience and SEO rankings, and increasing accessibility for a broader audience.

Photography

Do I need new photos for my website? Can I just use what I have?

Maybe! If you have a library of high-quality photos we might be able to make that work for your new site. However, my #1 recommendation for anyone trying to elevate their brand (which is usually why we’re creating a website in the first place) is having the right photos. Even the most interesting brands/services/products will fall flat without great imagery.

What is the difference between brand photography and product photography?

Brand photography focuses on capturing the overall essence and identity of your brand, including its values, mission, and personality, often featuring people or lifestyle elements. Product photography, on the other hand, highlights your specific products, showcasing their features, details, and benefits.

How many product photos do I need per product?

You need at least 3-5 photos per product, covering different angles, close-ups of details, and lifestyle shots if applicable, to provide customers with a comprehensive view.

What is the typical timeline for receiving edited photos after a photography session?

The timeline varies but typically a digital gallery of edited photos will be ready for you in 2-3 weeks. We will have that all figured out before we shoot!

Branding

Do I need professional help to develop my brand?

While some aspects of branding can be done independently the truth is, unless you specialize in creating cohesive and effective brand identities, you are eventually going to get hung up. Do it right the first time. Hire a professional. It will save time, resources, and mitigate potential setbacks. By prioritizing quality and thoroughness from the outset, businesses can establish a strong foundation for long-term success, avoiding costly rework while maintaining customer trust and satisfaction.

Is ‘branding’ more than a logo?

Yes! Branding encompasses everything that defines your business's identity—its name, logo, design elements, messaging, and values. It's crucial because it helps distinguish your business from competitors, builds customer recognition and loyalty, and communicates your unique value proposition.

How often should I refresh my brand?

Refreshing your brand should be considered strategically rather than on a strict schedule, as it depends on various factors such as market trends, changes in your target audience, shifts in industry standards, and the growth or evolution of your business. If you are ready for your business to hit that next level it could be time!

How can branding help me attract and retain customers?

Effective branding helps create positive perceptions about your business, making it easier to attract new customers. It also fosters customer loyalty by consistently delivering on your brand promise and building trust over time.
